Generally speaking HM Revenue & Customs rules do not restrict the types of investments in which SIPPs can invest.
There are exceptions, however, and certain types of asset class - whether invested in directly or indirectly - will trigger heavy tax penalties.
These include certain personal chattels (called 'tangible moveable assets'), such as art, antiques, racehorses, vintage and sports cars, and fine wines. Residential property is also to be avoided although may be acceptable if very specific conditions apply.
